Mausoleums
Buxoro viloyati | Bog‘i turkon QFY
Khoja Ubbon Ibn Usman Ibn Affan lived in the late 7th and early 8th centuries, was a follower, a jurist, a muhaddith, a reciter, a valiullah, and he was able to treat various diseases (in particular, vitiligo, eczema).
The Khoja Ubbon Mausoleum is an architectural and pilgrimage site located in Romitan District, Bukhara Region, about 50 km from Bukhara. The complex was built in the 16th century and is one of the region’s well-known sacred places.
According to historical sources, the site contained an ancient fortress and a well dating back to early times. The water of the Khoja Ubbon well, known for its salty and bitter taste, was believed to have healing properties, especially for skin diseases. For centuries, pilgrims visited the shrine, stayed there for some time, and used the water for drinking and bathing.
The name Khoja Ubbon means “guardian of water” or “protector of water.” Local legends describe him as the patron saint of boatmen and sailors on the Amu Darya River and as a holy man associated with rain and water. Archaeological research suggests that the area was inhabited as early as the 3rd–4th millennium BCE by communities engaged in hunting and animal husbandry.
The complex includes a sacred well, a khanqah (religious lodge), tombs, and ceremonial standards. Although parts of the site were demolished in 1964, the shrine was later restored, a new well was opened, and the mausoleum complex was renovated.
