Khalifai Khudaydod Complex

An architectural monument in the Bukhara region (1777-1855). The complex consists of a madrasa, a mosque, a courtyard, a sardoba, and a cemetery. The courtyard is surrounded on three sides by single-story cells. The mosque, located in the southwestern part of the courtyard, is square-shaped, covered with a dome, and has a veranda with wooden columns on three sides, the style of which is in ganch carving, the columns are beautifully decorated with carved patterns.

The Khalfa Khudoydod Complex is a historic religious and educational ensemble located in the Havzi Nav quarter of Bukhara. It was founded by Sheikh Khudoydod ibn Toshmuhammad Azizon al-Bukhari, a prominent representative of the Yasavi Sufi order who was originally from Khorezm.

According to historical sources, Khudoydod purchased land and built a madrasa, khanqah (Sufi lodge), sardoba (covered reservoir), mosque, and ablution facilities. The complex became an important spiritual and educational center, where approximately 150–200 students studied. The founder’s tomb is located within the complex.

Architecture

The complex is organized around a courtyard surrounded on three sides by single-story hujras (student cells). The mosque, located in the southwestern part of the complex, has a square plan topped by a dome and is complemented by wooden-columned verandas decorated with carved plaster and woodwork. A small minaret above the entrance courtyard was used for the call to prayer.

The complex also includes a historic sardoba, accessible by stairs, and a memorial area containing the tomb of Khalfa Khudoydod. Its architectural layout reflects the religious and memorial architecture typical of 18th–19th century Bukhara and represents a valuable example of a multifunctional Islamic complex.
