The goldsmith's skullcap is considered the largest and most complex in terms of its appearance among the skullcaps in Bukhara. In the past, there were 36 jewelry workshops and shops in its alleys. Trade rows, warehouses, and caravanserais were built around it.
Toki Zargaron (Persian: “Dome of the Jewelers”) is one of the most remarkable architectural monuments of Bukhara and a historic commercial center dedicated to the sale of jewelry and luxury goods. The structure was built in 1582 during the reign of the Shaybanid ruler Abdullah Khan II and is included in the National Register of Immovable Cultural Heritage Sites of Uzbekistan.
Toki Zargaron is considered the largest and most architecturally complex of Bukhara’s famous covered trading domes. It stands at the intersection of two major streets of the old city and serves as a covered crossroads (chorsu), facilitating trade and transportation.
The central octagonal hall is covered by a massive dome, while smaller surrounding domes once sheltered workshops and shops. During the Middle Ages, skilled craftsmen produced earrings, rings, weapon ornaments, engraved seals, beads, and necklaces here.
Toki Zargaron was an important international trading hub. Merchants from Arab lands, Persia, India, Russia, China, and Turkey came here to sell their goods. Products traded in the market included Chinese silk, Kashmiri shawls, Egyptian textiles, Arab prayer rugs, Tibetan spices, and many other valuable commodities.
The complex also contained food stalls where visitors could purchase traditional pastries, bread, and hot meals. Royal decrees were often publicly announced within the market. Historically, there were 36 jewelry workshops and shops under its vaulted passages, surrounded by trading rows, warehouses, and caravanserais.
Located next to the Ulugh Beg Madrasa, Toki Zargaron occupies the central crossroads of Bukhara’s ancient city center. Following Uzbekistan’s independence, the monument underwent restoration. Today, it houses artisan workshops and souvenir shops selling jewelry, wooden handicrafts, spices, and antique collections.
Toki Zargaron was constructed from baked brick, wood, stone, and ganch (decorative plaster). Its large central dome rests on eight arches. The structure measures 45.4 × 43.5 meters and reaches a height of 16.7 meters. The base diameter of the dome is approximately 14 meters. The polygonal drum contains 16 windows that provide natural illumination to the interior. The surrounding shop domes range in height from 5 to 7 meters.
