The Talipoch Gate was built between 1557 and 1598 during the reign of the Shaybanid ruler Abdullah Khan II. After establishing a new park in the western part of Bukhara, the ruler ordered the construction of this gate near a large hill.

The Shaybanid rulers strictly followed specific architectural principles, including careful planning, accurate site selection, avoidance of wastefulness, and a deliberate, unhurried construction process. Special attention was also given to the placement of canals, irrigation ditches, gardens, and ponds near the defensive walls in order to create a favorable microclimate.

The gate served as an important passage leading to Amirobod, Chorbakr, Jondor, and Khorezm. It was also used by pilgrims traveling to the sacred sites of Khoja Ubon and Ogoi Buzruk.

Today, the Talipoch Gate is one of the few gates of Bukhara that has survived in its original form. The total length of Bukhara’s defensive walls was approximately 12 kilometers, with a height of 10 meters and a thickness of 5 meters.

Architecture

The gate was constructed with two decorative towers (“guldasta”), an archway, vaulted structures, and ornamental niches. Its upper section is crowned with battlements designed to harmonize with the ancient fortress walls.

The shrine of Zinda Fil and the burial site of Ahmad Jami are located near the gate.

By the 1950s, the gate had fallen into a state of disrepair. It was restored in 1960 by the master craftsmen Aminjon Salomov and Mubin Mo‘minov, and later restored again in 2005 by Soli Karimov.

Today, the Bukhara Central Market is located next to the Talipoch Gate.

On March 11, 2022, heavy rainfall caused part of the fortress wall on the left side of the Talipoch Gate to collapse. The monument was subsequently included in the list of cultural heritage sites scheduled for preservation and restoration during 2022. For this purpose, 1 billion Uzbek soums were allocated from the state budget.
