Sheikh Jalal Gate

The Sheikh Jalol Gate is one of the historic gates of Bukhara, located on the southern side of the city. It was rebuilt in the 16th century during the reign of the Shaybanid ruler Abdulaziz Khan and is also mentioned in some sources as the Jalolobod Gate.

Historical documents from 1691–1692 mention both the gate and the nearby Sheikh Jalol neighborhood. According to tradition, Abdulaziz Khan, a follower of Sheikh Jaloliddin, renamed the gate in honor of the saint. Previously, it had been known as Boboi Morkushon Gate. During the restoration, the ruler also commissioned the construction of a khanqah (Sufi lodge), a pool, a minaret, and residential cells near the gate.

Outside the gate were extensive gardens, including the gardens and mausoleum of Khoja Ismatulloh Bukhari, making the area an important spiritual and cultural center.

Architecture

The gate originally stood about 11–12 meters high and measured approximately 14 × 20 meters. It featured monumental portals on both its inner and outer sides. Abdulaziz Khan ordered the upper section to be decorated with ornamental crowns and blue-tiled domes. However, due to neglect, many of the decorative tiles fell off by 1898, and the surrounding structures gradually deteriorated.

The gate, along with the khanqah, minaret, and pool, eventually fell into ruin and was completely demolished in 1968. Based on restoration projects prepared in 2008–2009, master architects Muzaffar Mirzayev and Sharif Rahimov reconstructed the Sheikh Jalol Gate and restored the adjacent section of the ancient city wall.
