"Sayfiddin Bokharzi" shrine

Sayfiddin Boharzi (1190–1261), whose full name was Abu al-Ma'ali Said ibn al-Mutahhar, was one of the most prominent Sufi masters, theologians, and poets of the Muslim East. Born in Khorasan, he studied in Herat and Nishapur before becoming a disciple of the renowned Sufi leader Najm al-Din Kubra, founder of the Kubrawiyya order.

Sayfiddin Boharzi later settled in Bukhara, where he spent nearly forty years teaching and guiding his followers. He gained great respect among the local population and considerable influence among the Mongol rulers. During the difficult period of the Mongol invasion, he encouraged people to preserve their faith, morality, and spiritual values.

Under his influence, a number of Mongols embraced Islam. Among them was Berke Khan of the Golden Horde, who traveled to Bukhara to accept Islam from the famous sheikh. His efforts contributed to the spread of Islam and the construction of mosques and madrasas throughout the region.

Sayfiddin Boharzi authored several important works in Arabic and Persian, including Risala dar Ishq (“Treatise on Love”), Rubaiyat, Wasiyatnama (“Testament”), and other writings on Sufism and theology.

After his death in 1261, he was buried in Fathabad near Bukhara. A mausoleum was later erected over his grave, and in 1358 the Mausoleum of Buyan-Quli Khan was built nearby. Today, the Sayfiddin Boharzi Memorial Complex remains an important pilgrimage site and historical monument in the Bukhara region.
