Karakul Gate by the Shaybanid ruler Abdulla Khan II It was built between 1558 and 1575. Shaybanid rulers strictly adhered to the specific rules of construction, which included a thoroughly studied construction plan, accurate and correct site selection, avoidance of wastefulness, no haste, and the use of various structures, including those near defensive walls

Karakul Gate is one of the historic gates of Bukhara, built between 1558 and 1575 during the reign of the Shaybanid ruler Abdullah Khan II. It is located on the western side of the city and served as the main route toward Karakul, as well as the roads leading to Iran, Khorasan, and other regions along the Silk Road.

The gate played an important role in the trade network of the Great Silk Road. A large market stretched from the gate area through the city, reaching the Havzi Nav and Volidai Azizkhan quarters. For many residents of Bukhara, this gate was also the starting point for the pilgrimage to Mecca, which earned it the popular name “Pilgrims’ Gate” (Haj Gate).

Unlike several other city gates, Karakul Gate survived the Red Army assault on Bukhara in 1920.

Architecture

The gate was constructed with large arched passages and decorative corner towers. Built of square baked bricks measuring approximately 25 × 25 cm, it was crowned with crenellated decorative elements that matched the city walls.

In 1975, restoration work was carried out under the supervision of master builder Ahror Asrorov. Further preservation efforts began in 2008 as part of a program to restore Bukhara’s historic walls and gates. Today, Karakul Gate remains one of the best-preserved gates of old Bukhara and continues to attract visitors interested in the city's rich history.
