The Fayzabad khanaka was built in 1598-1599 by the famous Sufi Mawlana Poyanda Muhammad Akhsi.
Fayzabad Khanaqah is an architectural monument located in Bukhara, Uzbekistan. It was built between 1598 and 1599 by Dustum Devonbegi during the reign of the Shaybanid ruler Abdullah Khan II. The monument is included in the National Register of Immovable Cultural Heritage Sites of Uzbekistan.
History
The Fayzabad Khanaqah was constructed in 1598–1599 at the initiative of Dustum Devonbegi. During the second half of the 16th century, the construction of khanaqahs became widespread in Bukhara. A khanaqah served as a residence for dervishes and Sufi followers, and such structures were especially popular during the Shaybanid period.
The Fayzabad area originally contained a cemetery where Poyanda Muhammad Akhsh Fayzabadi, a representative of the Naqshbandi Sufi order, and his descendants were buried. Poyanda Muhammad Akhsh Fayzabadi died in 1601. The khanaqah is distinguished by its open-arched gallery, a unique feature among Bukhara’s architectural monuments. Floral ornaments and calligraphic decorations were extensively used in its design.
On the initiative of Muhammad Akhsh Fayzabadi, a complex consisting of a khanaqah, residential cells, and a domed ablution facility was established. According to waqf documents from the 16th–17th centuries, the complex owned numerous shops, mills, and bathhouses.
Restoration work was carried out in 1970–1971. The old cemetery was removed and transformed into a landscaped garden. Between 2008 and 2012, the monument underwent another major restoration conducted by specialists of a scientific restoration workshop. Today, the khanaqah functions as a mosque.
Architecture
The Fayzabad Khanaqah was built in the traditional style of Central Asian architecture using baked brick, wood, stone, and ganch (plaster). The building measures 35 × 28.8 meters. At its center is a large domed hall measuring 12.7 × 12.7 meters, surrounded on three sides by an arched gallery.
The main façade features a monumental portal (pishtaq), while two-story cells and arched corridors are located on both sides. The dome rests on an octagonal drum, and natural light enters through windows placed around its base. The interior is richly decorated with carved ganch, floral motifs, and muqarnas ornamentation. The open-arched gallery gives the monument its distinctive architectural character.
The khanaqah was restored during the 1970s and 1980s by specialists of the Bukhara Scientific Restoration Workshop. It is included in the UNESCO World Heritage list as part of Bukhara’s historic architectural heritage.
