The Khanaqah of Fayzabad was built in 1598-1599 by the famous Sufi Mawlana Poyanda-Muhammad Akhsi Fayzabad. He died two years after construction, in 1601. The mosque is designed for five daily prayers, Friday and community prayers. The mosque also served as a place for Sufi religious ceremonies and a temporary residence for dervishes.

The Fayzobod Khanqah was built in 1598–1599 during the reign of the Shaybanid ruler Abdullah Khan II by Do‘stum Devonbegi. Khanqahs were important centers for Sufi life and spiritual practice, and their construction became especially widespread in Bukhara during the second half of the 16th century.

The complex was associated with the Naqshbandi scholar and Sufi Poyanda Muhammad Akhsi Fayzobodi, who died in 1601 and was buried in the nearby cemetery together with his descendants. Historical records indicate that the complex included a khanqah, student cells, and a domed ablution facility. Waqf documents from the 16th–17th centuries mention that numerous shops, mills, and bathhouses belonged to the khanqah.

The monument underwent restoration in 1970–1971 and again between 2008 and 2012. Today, the khanqah functions as a mosque, and a renovated mausoleum stands nearby.

Architecture

The Fayzobod Khanqah is a remarkable example of Central Asian architecture. Built of baked brick, wood, stone, and plaster, the complex measures approximately 35 × 28.8 meters. At its center stands a large domed hall (12.7 × 12.7 meters) surrounded on three sides by open arcaded galleries.

The main façade features a monumental portal, while two-story cells and vaulted corridors occupy the sides. The dome rests on an octagonal drum with windows that illuminate the interior. The hall is richly decorated with carved floral ornaments, muqarnas, and elegant plasterwork in gray and yellow tones. The khanqah is especially notable for its open-gallery design, which distinguishes it from many other monuments in Bukhara.

The monument is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Historic Centre of Bukhara.
