Degrezi Mosque

Degrezi Mosque (Hazrati Sayyid Bandkushoyi Mosque) is an architectural monument located in Bukhara. The mosque was built in the 19th century and is included in the National Register of Immovable Cultural Heritage Sites of Uzbekistan.

The mosque forms part of a complex that includes the mausoleum of Sayyid Poband. Several buildings are situated between the mosque and the mausoleum. The word “Degrezi” means “cauldron casters” or “boiler makers.” The mosque is located in the Degrezi quarter and is also widely known as Sayyid Bandkusho Mosque. This name appears in waqf documents dating from the 16th century and from 1790–1791.

Although relatively small in size, the mosque features a well-designed and functional architectural layout. It was constructed on the site of an older mosque dating back to the 16th century. In front of the mosque there is a small courtyard built on a raised platform. The entrance to the courtyard passes through a domed gateway that once contained an azan-khana (a place for calling the faithful to prayer).

A marble inscription panel is installed in the portal of the gateway. The mosque is built of baked brick and includes an iwan on its eastern side. The monument underwent restoration several years ago, during which skilled craftsmen reconstructed the wooden ceilings and doors. The mosque’s doors are decorated with carved Arabic inscriptions and floral ornaments. Inside the mosque there is a mihrab and wooden columns supporting the interior structure.

Above the entrance passage is a marble plaque bearing a two-line inscription carved in the Nastaliq script. Based on its decorative style and ornamentation, the plaque dates to the early 20th century. The inscription reads:

"The mosque of Hazrat Sayyid Abulhasan Poband, known by the title Sayyid Kusho."
