Built in 1860 by Russian Orthodox Christians, the building is dedicated to Michael the Archangel.

The Church of Archangel Michael is an active Orthodox Christian church located in the city of Bukhara. It belongs to the Tashkent and Uzbekistan Diocese of the Central Asian Metropolitan District of the Russian Orthodox Church.

The first church was established in 1860. After the original wooden structure was severely damaged by fire, a new brick church was constructed in 1875 based on the design of architect A. Benois. The church was consecrated on November 21, 1875. It was closed in 1929, and its bell tower was demolished in 1931. In 1992, the church was returned to the faithful, restored, and reopened in honor of Saint Archangel Michael.

History

In 1860, Russian Orthodox settlers began arriving in the outskirts of Bukhara and built a wooden church for worship. The church was dedicated to Saint Alexander, most likely Saint Alexander Nevsky.

Following a devastating fire in 1872, the original church suffered significant damage. In 1875, builders and military personnel were brought to Bukhara to construct a new church made of baked brick. Like many Orthodox churches in Turkestan, it was built according to a standard architectural design of the period.

Over the years, the church came under the administration of various military districts and later the Turkestan Diocese. During the Soviet era, it was closed and converted into a warehouse, similar to many religious buildings throughout Central Asia.

In 1931, the separate bell tower was demolished by order of the Soviet authorities. The tower housed five large bells, the largest of which was named after Archangel Michael.

In 1992, the church was returned to the Orthodox community. Restoration work began, and part of the iconostasis, church furnishings, and sacred icons were preserved by parishioners and later restored.

Architecture

The church features a cruciform (cross-shaped) layout and an elaborately decorated iconostasis. The interior includes an altar area, a prayer hall, clergy quarters, and service rooms. A temporary bell tower remains in the church courtyard.

Today, the church continues to function as an active place of worship. Religious services are conducted regularly under the leadership of Priest Leonid Petrov. The church remains an important spiritual center for the Orthodox Christian community of Bukhara.
