Boboyi Poradoz was born in Bukhara in 842 and died in 925. He lived for 83 years. Sources state that "Shavqi Bobo was originally named Poradoz." The reason for this is that he lived with the passion and love of Allah. Therefore, he was also called Boboyi Shavqi.

The Boboyi Poradoz Mausoleum is an architectural monument located in Bukhara. Built in the 19th century, it stands outside the former Sallakhona Gate, near the present-day Ibn Sina Library. The monument is included in the National Register of Immovable Cultural Heritage Sites of Uzbekistan.

History

The mausoleum was built over the grave of the renowned scholar and Sufi saint Hazrat Boboyi Poradoz (“the shoe repairer”), who lived between 842 and 925 CE. He worked as a shoemaker and shoe repair specialist and is therefore regarded as the patron saint of shoemakers and related craftsmen.

In addition to Boboyi Poradoz, several other individuals are buried within the mausoleum complex. The entrance portal has been restored and decorated with ornamental patterns. A traditional sacred banner stands beside the mausoleum, indicating the burial place of the saint.

Inside the mausoleum is a marble cenotaph, with seating areas provided for visitors and pilgrims. The building also contains a mihrab. According to Bukhara historian Sadriddin Salim Bukhori, during the Soviet period an attempt was made to demolish the mausoleum, but the tractor reportedly stopped working and the driver died, after which the monument was left untouched.

Following Uzbekistan’s independence, the mausoleum was restored through the initiative of businessman Abdulgafur Mirzoyev. Today it is visited by shoemakers, tailors, leather craftsmen, and many other artisans.

Architecture

The Boboyi Poradoz Mausoleum was built in the traditional style of Central Asian architecture using baked brick, wood, stone, and ganch (decorative plaster). The structure features both small and large domes and has been preserved to the present day.

Legend

According to local legend, the soil from the grave of Boboyi Poradoz possesses healing properties and is believed to cure skin diseases and various wounds.
