Abdulaziz Khan Madrasah

Abdulaziz Khan Madrasa is one of the most magnificent architectural monuments of Bukhara. It was built in 1652 under the patronage of the Uzbek ruler Abdulaziz Khan by the court architect Mimkhoqon ibn Khoja Muhammad Amin. The madrasa stands directly opposite the famous Ulugh Beg Madrasa, together forming the renowned architectural ensemble known as the Kosh Madrasa (“Twin Madrasas”).

The madrasa is regarded as one of the finest examples of 17th-century Bukhara architecture. It consists of two-story student cells, a spacious courtyard, a mosque, lecture halls, and a library. The overall dimensions of the complex are approximately 50 × 67 meters, while the courtyard measures 28 × 35 meters.

Its most remarkable feature is its rich and sophisticated decoration. The façade and walls are adorned with colorful glazed tiles, floral ornaments, gilded patterns, and images of mythical birds and animals. Such figurative motifs are rare in Central Asian Islamic architecture and make the madrasa unique. The interior of the mosque, classrooms, and library is also decorated with exquisite kundal paintings and ornamental designs.

According to local legends, after returning from a pilgrimage to Mecca, Abdulaziz Khan ordered the construction of a madrasa unlike any other in Bukhara. The craftsmen incorporated symbolic representations of earthly and eternal life into the decorative elements, giving the monument a deep philosophical meaning.

Today, Abdulaziz Khan Madrasa remains one of Bukhara’s most famous historical landmarks, admired for its artistic beauty, architectural grandeur, and cultural significance.
